Everyone that’s already visited Summerfest knows it’s been oppressively hot, but it could be a lot worse…you could be one of the front of house or monitor sound guys who have to endure the whole 11 day run for about 16 hours each day! Yup, most of them are docked at one stage for the duration of the fest…and duration of the day. Those guys and gals are really earning their keep this year, and if you’re down there 2day, let ‘em know you appreciate them!
A pretty diverse lineup for today with everything from a Paul Oakenfold trance party at the Miller stage, classic rock with Dennis DeYoung of Styx at the new BMO pavilion, yearly college rock mainstays O.A.R. at the Harley Stage, and some great local rock from Ikarus Down at the Cascio Stage.
But…the highlights in my eyes for tonight are Dangerbird Records’ Fitz & the Trantrums and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. Unfortunately, they play at the same time so you’ll have to decide for yourself which band to enjoy. Fitz brings a heavy dose of soul review at the Potawatomi Stage at 10pm, bringing a bit more modern vibe to a Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings-esque approach, but still have that perfect made-for-vinyl, vintage sound that makes you want to move. They’ve been all over 88nine Radio Milwaukee for the last six months so most folks around town have heard the name at some point. Grace Potter is a great vocalist and multi-instrumentalist whose live performance does not disappoint one bit, backed by great musicians and great songwriting. Their openers Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights are worth a look as well.
