SUMMERFEST DAILY LOCAL LINEUP SATURDAY 6/30/2012

One of my favorite parts of Summerfest this year is the amount of local bands playing the various stages, getting a chance to open up for some amazing headliners. This provides a unique opportunity for local musicians to not only share the stage with some of their idols and hopefully make some fruitful connections but also opens them up to an audience that might never hear them otherwise. In my opinion, this is the way it should be and I’m glad that those in charge at Summerfest agree. I’ve always hoped that one day it will be the standard for venues in our town to have local bands open for touring acts so why not start at the World’s Largest Music Festival? One notable example of this tonight is Milwaukee’s own Fresh Cut Collective opening for The Roots, one of the most well known “hip hop with a band” groups around. Don’t miss what is sure to be an incredible show at the Miller Light Oasis starting with Fresh Cut at 8pm. Check out Fresh Cut’s new video on YouTube. Other favorites today include country-rock band Hugh Bob & the Hustle at the Potowatomi Stage at 5:30pm in addition to Heartless Bastarwith laying at 8:00pm. Catch Milwaukee’s indie-pop-rock with a flair group I’m Not A Pilot headlining the Cascio stage at 9pm. Check out the local (and WI in general) lineup listed below or at summerfest.com. SUMMERFEST LINE UP: FRIDAY JUNE 29th

Attention Milwaukeeans and Summerfest goers! Those who will be venturing down to Summerfest tonight take a look at our recommendations to make sure you hit the right stages. In addition to highlighting a few shows going on tonight I also want to share a little advice about transportation. Biking down to the Summerfest grounds is the easiest way to go, there are many bike racks and places to safely park your bike. If biking is not an option, the city bus is $3 roundtrip with it’s route following Wisconsin Avenue. And last but not least, if you’re going with a group there are many bars in Bay View, East Side and Downtown that are shuttling people down there and bringing them home! Here’s a link to Summerfest’s guide to transportation.

Anyways, back to the lineup for tonight! Locally speaking we have some reggae flavor, R.A.S Movement is opening for Jimmy Cliff which will be a fun and high energy show so wear your dancing shoes. Also, we have indie-rock band Jaill from Milwaukee playing on the Summerfest Rock stage at 8:00pm before The Hives. If you have not seen Jaill before make sure you do! Also Shaker and the Egg who performed at the WAMI’s this year is playing on the Potawatomi stage at 7:30. Tonight on the U.S Cellular stage MUTEMATH is headlining, I’m sad I’ll be missing this show. Finally, on the local Cascio stage, Wamsley is playing at 4:30 and the Elusive Parallelograms takes over at 6:00pm. JIMMY AT THE PROM’S NEW SINGLE: ESCAPE

Local musician and friend Sean Williamson, who also contributes his talents to Local Playlist recently released a new single called Escape with his rock band Jimmy At The Prom. Some might also recognize Sean as “Metal Minstral” or “The Situation” by his killer electric guitar solos.

What is unique about this single is that it was produced by Chuck Garric from Alice Cooper. In addition to Garric producing the album, he also added some backing vocals on the tracks. Also in Jimmy at the Prom is Matt Turner on bass, James Dahmann Jr. on vocals and Dave Schoepke on drums. The band has a flavor of influences from The Mars Volta, Crooked Vultures, Porcupine Tree and Tool. Any heavy metal junkie will be sure to enjoy this single, with it’s hard-hitting sound.

Take a listen and download the new single Escape by Jimmy at the Prom on ITunes or on their website.

TO THOSE OF YOU THAT CONTINUE TO DO IT WELL, I THANK YOU

I must be honest, I’ve been a bit bored with the music scene lately. It seems that “indie” has become a catch-all term for this safe, pseudo-sensitive sound that many bands gravitate to; being complacent and “appealing to the masses” instead of taking risks and pushing the envelope. Fortunately with some local bands this is not the case, and my ears cannot thank you enough.

I saw Hugh Bob & the Hustle at the Miller Stables the other weekend, and they gave a great performance despite the less than savory venue. These guys decided to experiment with their own style of country music, and their risk totally paid off. This is the kind of country that I can get into, and I won’t miss any future shows if I can help it.

When I’m talking to someone about Fresh Cut Collective, I can never give a description worthy of their unique style, and this is precisely why they continue to stand out. All of the members have a multitude of musical talents and have at least one other project in the works, and that collective passion comes out when they play together. Always ready to perform a new song or experiment with a new style, FCC recently showcased some new material last week at River Rhythms, and they have nearly an album’s worth of new songs to perform when they open for the Roots at Summerfest this year. In the music industry, your fans are the boss, and it’s not enough to keep regurgitating the same sound or the same set list. They understand this and we appreciate it.

Newcomers Kane Place Record Club continue to be one of the most charismatic bands I know, and for all the times I’ve seen them, I have yet to find someone who hasn’t enjoyed their live shows. Their lyrics are fun and catchy, they have a unique style and even with a new drummer they continue to be on top of their game. Fans and musicians alike need to pay attention, I have a feeling these guys are just getting started.

One band that’s quite familiar with the Milwaukee music scene is The Delta Routine. They’ve played in local bars since before front man Nick Amadeus was old enough to drink, and the fact that the band is finishing another album in addition to Nick’s own solo work is proof that they know how to stay current in this city. They brought in Kevin Topel for lead guitar when recording their album “More About You”, and now with Vic Buell and Al Kraemer (guitar and keys, respectively), their upcoming album will have a fuller pop/rock feel while maintaining the essence of The Delta Routine sound.

Are these the only good bands in Milwaukee? Of course not. These are a few bands have lured me in, and they know how to give me what I want and keep me wanting more. And I’m always looking for more, so show me what else you’ve got, Milwaukee, I know you have it in you.

TURN AROUND MILWAUKEE: BREAKAWAY BICYCLE COURIER

[cincopa A0HA56qYsaUO]

This month in light of our other organization Turn Around Milwaukee, I am bringing attention to Breakaway Bicycle Courier a local small business that I feel has unique character in addition to a environmentally friendly work ethic.

Currently and for some time now, there has been a movement of people, organizations and local businesses supporting a more positive look on life in Milwaukee. There is a music scene, art community and many subcultures within the larger community of Milwaukee. A false identity is that Milwaukee is only appealing to those who enjoy beer, cheese and meat, but do not judge us based on this identity. Yes, we do have great beer, cheese and meat but there is so much more available. My Milwaukee is a place where artists, musicians, organizations and small business are flourishing; one for example is Breakaway Bicycle Courier. This small business is something more than just cycle messaging, it’s a community in itself.

Breakaway Bicycle Courier Company is a diamond in the rough here in Milwaukee, providing something special for us. Supporting local industry in Milwaukee is very important because it contributes to that chain reaction. When you purchase a piece of art or an album from a local artist, that directly supports the city you live in. When using Breakaway Courier Company, you are not only supporting a local business that has been around for 13 years, but you are also keeping the air that we all breathe and share cleaner. These guys are fast and are willing to deliver practically anything! Most people might not be aware of this bicycle subculture in Milwaukee, so let me fill you in with some background information. Breakaway Bicycle Courier is located in the heart of Milwaukee’s downtown on 224 W Wells St in a rustic and unique warehouse space.

During the short amount of time I spent at Breakaway’s “clubhouse”, I picked up on some pretty cool and interesting things about the place. One thing that sparked my interest (being a music journalist after all) was that the space used to house a record store that was the original entrance to Breakaway almost 13 years ago. Now, they have a cool workspace fit with bicycle racks close to entrance, pool table, a foosball table, and of course a man control station. Every call received at Breakaway goes through the dispatcher and then the information is sent to the couriers over FCC airwaves. Due to using the FCC for communications, each cycle courier has his or her own unique color code names. Employees refer to themselves during and after work as their color names: Amber, Purple, Blue, Jade, Green, Gray, Coco, Smoke, Maroon and Navy, their names adorn their cool courier bags (Shag Bags) you see on the streets. Breakaway is not limited to packages or mail, even though they have a cargo bike named “Bullet” that can pretty much handle any load. The culture of a bike messenger never stops when the day is over either. Most of them rely on their bikes for transportation everyday no matter rain or shine. Also, people might not realize that bike messaging is worldwide. The CMCW or Cycle Messenger World Championship happens annually, with this year’s competition in Chicago. The CMCW was established in order to celebrate the culture that is cycle messaging. The people who compete are among the world’s smartest, strongest and fastest bike messengers.

Supporting this industry is an action of good taste. Not only is supporting the local business community in Milwaukee important, but the result is larger. Supporting Breakaway or any other courier company in Milwaukee not only keeps a biking culture alive but also keeps the air we share clean too.

ANTIOQUIA RELEASING NEWEST ALBUM: VIAJERO

Saturday June 16th Antioquia is squeezing in their official album release event in Oakland CA between a busy list of tour dates. Recently on tour in the Midwest in May, Antioquia blew up the music scene in Wisconsin with performances at Jam for Jam in Sullivan, Club Garibaldi in Bay View, a gig in Madison and others. I first met Antioquia at Jam for Jam and it was an instant attraction. Viajero is the most recent album release for this spunky charismatic group (pronounced An-tee-oh-kee-ah if you were wondering). The band members all live in Oakland California when not on the road, touring and promoting their new album all over the nation. There is a little Milwaukee flavor in this album as lead percussionist Craig Miller is originally from Milwaukee and attended Riverside High School. Viajero was produced by Jesse Sheehan, a Milwaukee native whose name might be recognized by his past career with De La Buena on saxophone produced this album. Tracks such as “No Sleep Till Oakland” and “There’s A Man Jumping Off The Planet” feature a funky, cranky and rude baritone saxophone sound played on the record by Jesse Sheehan. Viajero is well balanced with a large emphasis on percussion as well as lyrics that relate to current events that are happening here in Wisconsin and around the world. This full drum flavor is well rounded and topped with sprinkles of chimes and powerful female vocals from lead singer Rachel. Their genre is self-created of tribal and electronic rock influence. The power of protest is most prominent in “No Sleep Till Oakland” with lyrics referring to one versus the ninety-nine percent, as well as in “Rage of Love”. Songs “Dibon” and “Kassa-Nisoro” are original to the culture in Columbia. Mentioning they have a large focus on percussion is only a understatement during a live show. They use traditional Columbian drumming styles picked up by living in the region for a couple years and set up in the front of the stage during shows, immersing themselves in the audience. Some of their other releases include Gringolandia, Live at the Uptown and My Piano Ate the Front Page of the San Francisco Chronicle, all have that fun blend of rock and traditional Columbian percussion. Seeing Antioquia live is a very fun and engaging experience. I highly suggest picking up Viajero and listening to it to understand what the buzz is about. Antioquia is a great group of people, talented to say the least. Catch them next time they are in your neck of the woods. There is a full list of tour dates on their homepage.

Also check out the music video for “Idaho” “Idaho” one of the tracks off Viajero.

BAY VIEW GALLERY NIGHT AT CLUB GARIBALDI 6/1/2012

This month Milwaukee kicked off summer festival season with Bay View Gallery Night. The event, presented by Made in Milwaukee and The Alchemist Theatre, brought on a day of exploring and celebration in the Bay View community. Over 25 venues featured more than 50 local artists and 20 local bands, giving much promise to the summer’s upcoming event series and concerts.

The night stretched across the neighborhood’s sky, its air carrying the warmth of June, the buzz and glow of neon signs from windows, and the sound of people and music from open doorways. At Club Garibaldi, more than 200 people attended to see the headlining acts of Bay View Gallery Night.

The audience quickly filled the bar and concert space of Club Garibaldi, eager to witness the music of D’Amato, Rusty Ps and MC Oneself, Sat. Night Duets, and The Fatty Acids. In addition to this great lineup, live paintings from local artists Dwellephant and Field Lehmann were featured.

D’Amato took the stage, wearing a black suit with a red tie and suspenders that match the red sequined dress of his backup singer. Planning and good taste are the first parts of his act that catch your attention. With a beat machine and himself on mic and guitar, D’Amato’s sound meets your ear with a blend of hip-hop beats, bluesy rock guitar solos, and quick-witted lyrical rhymes.

D’Amato’s appeal goes beyond the content of his songs and into the realm of performance. He blends his rapping with singing, holding out notes at the end of bars with vibrato. His soulful delivery is in his energy as he moves from rapping to singing to vocal scat solos. Matching this expressive method are his guitar solos. He gets down to his knees, with sweat beading on his brow and his hands laboring over the frets. He glides through blues scales and holds onto high notes with bends.

Being a skilled musician is enough to get a crowd’s attention and have you work heard. But being both a skilled musician and a committed performer hooks an audience so that you work is felt. And D’Amato’s expression shares an experience with us rather than just sounds. Which is why it is shocking that this guy’s name isn’t seen on more concert fliers and has yet to have an album out. D’Amato’s facebook is the best way to get updates about his shows and even treats us to his sound. Look for his next show and discover an artist that will shock you with his talent and inspire you to share his music with others.

On a side stage were local artists Dwellephant and Field Lehmann, bringing their inspirations to life on canvas with paint. Throughout the evening they created meticulously, concentrated on their art as it took form before the crowd.

Live paintings from the artist Dwellephant

“Seeing Sunshine,” by Field Lehmann

The next rare delight was the live performance of The Rusty Ps and MC Oneself. The hip-hop group featured three emcees and a live band. MC Oneself started off alone on stage and sparked the performance that fully exploded with two other emcees of The Rusty Ps, Phantom Channel and Count Classic, accompanied by a live band.

The Rusty Ps are no strangers to the stages of Milwaukee and hip-hop fans in the country. Coming to rise in the late 90s, the group developed relationships with the famed Rhymesayers label in Minneapolis and recorded with Slug, the phenomenon behind Atmosphere. Earning the title of Wisconsin’s best hip-hop band several times over at the WAMI awards, as well as many other titles, the group has provided Milwaukee’s hip-hop scene with a style that is now signature to Midwestern hip-hop.

The beats they use are well in place, providing a simple foundation that’s built upon with other instrumentation, including guitar, bass, and piano, as well as record scratching and sampling. These elements are graced with introspective lyrics of the group’s emcees who deliver their songs with fluent exchanges of verse among one another.

To the first-time listener, they are awe inspiring. Their complexity of lyrics, paired with their beats, showcases the heart of their talent. Their lyrics move fast, running through autobiographic narratives that center around an emcee’s struggle to evolve their sound beyond that of their predecessors and contemporaries. With a clever philosophical rhyme, they weave details of daily life with technical terms to explore the discourse of science and self, all the while carrying a song and narrative that is accessible to the audience. The Rusty Ps are still on an evolutional path, as they take on new sounds of live elements to their set. Their performance featured one song with trumpet tracks, played by Kurt Raether of Fatty Acids.

With charged stage presence, well produced tracks, and lyrics that differentiate them as artists offering genuine works, The Rusty Ps successfully proved themselves as an opulence of not only Milwaukee’s music scene but the Midwestern region in general.

Sat. Night Duets kicked off their summer tour with The Fatty Acids. Their sound sported guitar riffs and piano chords that are signature to the American Rock genre, as well as lyrics that were more than often expressively spoken than sung, and open guitar chords and un-distilled sounds that characterize the noise rock genre.

Pulling from various familiar styles makes the crowd easily grasp their musical intentions and purpose. It wasn’t too soon after they began their set that the audience joined in on the fun, getting up on their feet and clapping along to the music.

Capping off the evening were The Fatty Acids. The band’s choice to do another tour with Sat. Night Duets this summer was well made. The Fatty Acids kept the upbeat energy that Sat. Night Duets injected the crowd with and channeled it into their performance that moved the majority of the crowd to singing and dancing.

With a lineup that was stacked with talent, Gallery Night was a great success for celebrating some of the best in Milwaukee’s scene. Be sure to check out the other awesome events in store for this summer. You won’t be disappointed.

IKARUS DOWN, I’M NOT A PILOT, DANIEL BERES & KLASSIK TONIGHT AT THE MIRAMAR THEATRE

The Miramar Theatre hosts tons of great touring acts from all over the country most nights of the week. Their all ages policy for most shows makes it easy for the younger population to enjoy live music too, which is amazing. Tonight, they’ll be hosting some of Milwaukee’s best for a special event, involving music and video.

Daniel Beres, a local pop musician, will be shooting his upcoming solo music video during his performance. Dan was the lead guitarist of Truth in Fiction, a band that found success touring with Fall Out Boy, Sugarcult and other national acts as well as playing for the 2004 Vans Warped Tour. Dan’s solo performances showcase his amazing voice, excellent guitar skills and stage presence. Truly a performer at heart, Dan brings his charming personality to the stage, joking around with the audience, genuinely at ease in the spotlight. It’s easy to see that he’s having fun and is eager to make his fans have just as good of a time as he does. Look for a Local Playlist interview with Dan after tonight’s show coming soon and stay tuned to his Facebook fan page for show dates, videos and much more!

Also performing tonight is Klassik, a solo hip hop & jazz artist from Milwaukee. A graduate of Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Klassik spent 10 years studying jazz. This carries over into his unique sound, this brand of hip hop is a bit more well-bred and technically complicated than most. Check out Klassik’s Bandcamp page to download some of his music to get you pumped up for the show tonight. Klassik’s performance should blend well with I’m Not A Pilot, also performing tonight.

I’m Not A Pilot is one of Milwaukee’s most popular bands, known around town for their classically-infused pop-rock sound. It’s unique to find a rock band that has no guitars but the strings sound is more than filled out by Peter Thomas’ electric cello. A classically trained musician whose day job is performing with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, watching Peter play is an experience you will not forget. Lead singer Mark Glatzel’s pure vocals and deft piano playing convey such emotion that you can’t help but be moved when listening. They are backed by Adrian Esguerra on bass, whose intelligence and dry humor carry over into his stage presence and Steve Vorass Jr. on drums, whose impeccable timing determines the pace of the rhythm section. Don’t miss out on seeing this talented group of musicians and keep an eye on their website for upcoming shows and music!

Ikarus Down recently released their first full-length album, “Friction”, and have been playing lots of shows recently to show off their hard work (check out my review of the album). Songs from “Friction” have recently been played on Radio Milwaukee, 102.1, Kiss FM and WMSE, an indication of how great this album really is. Comprised of lead singer & rhythm guitarist Jon Ferrer, lead guitarist Ryan Gardiner, bassist Patrick Masimore, drummer Daniel Langkammer and keyboard player Nick Brenneman, Ikarus Down has a progressive, alternative rock sound that has something for every musical taste. Whether you like classic rock, alternative, pop-rock, punk, folk or instrumental jams, their music contains elements of all of these. Check out Ikarusdown.com for their summer calendar as well as catch them headlining the Cascio Stage at Summerfest Friday July 6th at 9pm!

So come on down to the Miramar Theatre tonight to check out this compilation of great musical acts, doors open at 7:30 pm. Hope to see you all there and maybe even afterwards at Oakland Gyros for a late night snack!
